Do heat pumps require a furnace backup?
Typically, no. The variables are 1) the leakiness of the house 2) the size of the ductwork 3) the quality of the heat pump We will evaluate/manage these with 1) fuel-based load calculations 2) ductwork measure and evaluation 3) selecting only high performing cold climate heat pumps.
Note that electric backup coils are integrated to provide backup and supplemental heat for the coldest days.
Will a heat pump keep my house sufficiently warm?
Yes, assuming proper prep (see previous question), and installation (see next question).
What are important considerations in a heat pump installation?
Correct sizing – furnaces are often twice the size they need to be and contractors do the same with heat pumps. Rather than doing an accurate heat load calculation, they just go big. This leads to short-cycling, early blower failure and poor A/C dehumidification. OR they say a furnace backup is needed – then they oversize the furnace and undersize the heat pump. The undersized heat pump will only do a fraction of the home’s heating with the furnace doing the majority – which reinforces the misinformation that heat pumps can’t carry the full heating load.
Installer heat pump experience and expertise – heat pump contractors must know refrigeration, electrical, gas, ductwork, software controls and thermostat wiring, much of this unfamiliar to those coming from gas backgrounds, not to mention the evaluation of heat loads, duct pressure and airflow. The integration of these skills with attention to detail is demanding and impressive and uncommon. Required: installer references from multiple homeowners with at least three winters with their heat pumps OR Energy Neighbour can refer you to vetted and experienced installers.
Do I need to insulate my home before getting a heat pump?
Typically, no. We’ve helped hundreds of homeowners get off gas without adding insulation. That said, it is good to do what is reasonable to improve the air sealing and insulation of your home. We partner with an excellent energy auditor to support your informed decision making.
Do I need to upgrade my electric panel to get a heat pump?
Typically, no. We’ve helped hundreds of homeowners get heat pumps (and fully electrify their homes) on their existing 100 amp service. Exceptions may be if you have a hot tub, kiln, full appliance basement apartment, etc. We will evaluate your usage (most homes don’t use more than 30 amps at a time). The heat pump requires 30 amps (can use A/C slots) and the backup coils need 30 amps (these will be rarely used and space can usually be found on your electric panel).
Are there any loans?
Yes. The federal zero interest loan is an excellent resource. Toronto homeowners can also access the HELP loan. We can help you determine which is right for you.
Are there any rebates?
Yes. The province of Ontario has rebates for heat pumps, insulating, air sealing, windows, doors and heat pump water heaters. The rules are complicated. Heat pumps don’t require an energy audit, but the others do and you must do at least two eligible retrofits to qualify. We can help you navigate the details, determine what’s a fit for your home, find good contractors and clarify steps to accessing the rebates.
